Imperfect or preterite- It was December fifth?

can you help me conjugate this please? I know usually the imperfect proceeds "was" or a least at the level i'm learning it has, but i'm confused for this one. i know it's a date, so i use "estar," but the spanish translation website has two translations "fue" and "era." which do i use? thanks
