Do you think the idea of being transported to another world/land (ie, Alice in Wonderland) is overdone?

I'm considering writing a novel (not to publish, because I doubt it will be that good- more for personal enjoyment and the feeling of accomplishing a goal, although if it turns out well I may enter it in a contest). In my mind, I think it will be the type of book one would put in the 'Young Adult' genre. Basically, a girl is transported to another world, where she learns a valuable lesson (I'm avoiding the interesting details, obviously, because I want my idea to be private).Yes this is very broad, but I have a set idea of what this world will be like- my creativity has no boundaries, as my friends say, and this world displays that. However- I'm having a hard time deciding where this world will be, and how will my character get there. Is it a planet? Underground? Some impossible place like Wonderland? Just a dream? I really want to avoid the cliche 'And then I woke up' ordeal. Without some solid ground, this story will seem cheesy and stupid. I don't know. I need some advice to help me get started on my brainstorm... Any clever ideas that would get me out of thinking inside the box? Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
