A guy I work with told me this in Spanish..?

At my work a server that only speaks Spanish was talking to another guy and said my ex "fue un tonto" (was a fool). He then told me the same thing and said my ex didn't know what he had with me and he was in the US (my ex is from Mexico) and should have treated me better. What was he trying to say here? That he was a moron because of the way he treated me or just because he was in another country?
